Christian makes an excellent point, kids know when they are mentally ready to deal with any type of "scary" material. Fairy Tales were how life lessons were taught but now that we have these sugar coated versions of them we've forgotten that kids are better equipped to deal with "horribe" things then adults are because they don't have all that adult baggage thrown on them. In the words of Mitch Hedbergh or as close as I can remember any book is a kid's book if the kid can read. If we take that to heart then we will have some what well adjusted adults.

A little darkness (or a lot) in stories we tell to children is a good thing. There's not a single fairy tale that isn't based in something heinous and terrible. Just using H.C. Andersen there's death (The Little Match Girl), identity theft and enslavement (The Shadow), auto-amputation (The Red Shoes) and brain washing (The Snow Queen).

Sweet baby Jebus! A Wednesday Crankcast!

Sober House/Celebrity Rehab/Dr. Drew: Awesome.

Let The Right One In: Read the novel. The screenplay was adapted by the novelist himself, so if you dig the movie, it's definitely worth reading if only to spend more time in that world. Eli's origin is chillingly fleshed out. As is Eli's true relationship with the old dude. Or you could just read the wiki. (And cringe.)
