Thanks for shedding light on the whole Human Centipede thing, Taber. I went and watched it, and I have to agree with you. It was surprisingly well made and not as graphic as you’d think. I still wouldn’t say I liked it, though, and I couldn’t really recommend it to anyone, but I have to give them points for creative marketing.

AICN by it’s very purpose is by fanboys for fanboys, so I can’t fault Harry and/or Merrick for their overenthusiasm for just about everything. I think Vern is my favorite as he’s the guy that discovers and reviews the direct to DVD films that no one else bothers to cover. Plus he wrote Seagalogy, the in-depth analysis of Steven Seagal’s career and films. He was dead-on with his recomendations of Blood & Bone, Universal Soldier: Regeneration, and Undisputed 2 & 3.

I also don’t mind Capone, he seems pretty even handed in his reviews.

Quick question for you Taber as a reader of AICN….

For the most part, there are few guys on there that I like, and find thier reviews or scoops informative/entertaining.

There is one guy however that comes off like a raging Fanboy and it drives me crazy ( no, not Harry ). Merrick.

Some of his stuff is OK, but most of the time comes off no better than the “Talkbackers” on the site.

Is it just me or do you pick up on that as well.

I would like to say that “I won’t even dignify your post with a response.” But I’m going to respond anyway.

It has been my experience that the people who bad mouth SNL saying “It hasn’t been funny in 20 years” hasn’t watched the show in 20 years, thus negating any opinion you would have on the subject.

Additionally, if people were tired of SNL, then the recent episode hosted by Betty White wouldn’t have scored higher ratings than most of the primetime shows that prior week.

The joy of SNL is to witness the ebbs and flows of the show. It’s current incarnation has been on a roll. I think Kristin Wiig, Bill Hader, Will Forte, Jason Sudeikis, Fred Armisen and Andy Samberg are all very talented people, and have introduced a new level of absurdist humor that the show never really had before. Even the lame sketches have their charms. “What up with that?” should never have been made into a recurring sketch but I’ll be damned if I don’t laugh everytime Bill Hader’s Lindsay Buckingham wordlessly conveys disappointment to acceptance when he is bumped, and I could watch Jason Sudeikis dance for 90 minutes alone.

Also, if you can piont to a single sketch in the last ten years featuring a man getting kicked in the crotch, then I will send you $10.

SNL is an institution. It has been a breeding ground some of our best comedic actors for 35 years ( Will Ferrell, Bill Murray, Chevy Chase, Charles Rocket, et al.). And it’s influence can be seen far and wide.

It’s unfortunate that MacGruber did not find it’s audience or rather it’s audience of stoners learned that there was very little crotch kicking and decided to wait for DVD. But for fans of absurdist comedy done on a grand scale, that film is nirvana.

Plainly, McGruber bombed and bombed hard because people are seriously sick of SNL. THe only peopel I know that still watch SNL are seriously burned out potheads or people who think watching a man being kicked in the crotch is the height of comedy.

Fuck SNL they got what they deserved for producing utter shit for decades now.

With that logic, that doesn’t bode well for Fox’s upcoming $100 million take on The A-Team.

I think the more likely culprit is that comedy is subjective. And Joe Moviegoer is much more likely to shell out cash to watch Katherine Heigel fumble with a gun with Ashton Kutcher, than watch Will Forte shove a stalk of celery up his ass.

McGruber – Okay, first I loved this movie.

That said, you gotta see how this movie was built for people who loved seeing 80′s Action flicks, A-Team, Knight Rider and of course their name sake. That might not be a huge enough demographic.

Hopefully people will find this movie in DVD like you did for Hot Rod.

Taber is dead on about was passes for “journalism” in the entertainment industry. “The Soup” is just as in depth as crap like Perez Hilton and Access Hollywood, and you get the added bonus of it being hosted by Joel Mchale.
