I read about this possible solution on an Apple forum so I’m curious to see if it works: try shortening the file name to just crankcast249 or something even shorter if you like and see if it stops the lockups.
While I’m here can those folks having problems tell me what OS you’re on?
crank!

Hey crank!
Shortening the file name works. I tried 249 and it plays fine. I’m using OSX 10.6.4 by the way.

I tried the original filename without the dash and it works too. Surely it couldn’t just be a dash?!?

So weird….If you don’t mind could you try replacing the dash with an underscore and see if it plays? Or if that doesn’t play leave the dash but just delete the last character and see if it’s a length issue.
Ain’t troubleshooting fun?

I am using windows 7, I download only from itunes.

shortening the name worked for me using vista

Shortening the name didn’t work for me. I’m on Windows XP.
July 15th, 2010 at 10:13 pm
Don’t know if this will help but it won’t play in Windows Media Player as well.

Crank!
The underscore symbol works in place of the dash. I tried typing “Crankcast Week 247 20100701 Crankcast Week 247 20100701 Crankcast Week 247 20100701” to test the length issue and it worked fine. It must be the dash. Perhaps Apple has changed the special characters that can be used on a mp3 file.
Could I have anything to do with the crankcast mp3 being mpeg-2, layer 3? Just a thought….

1. Great Show!
2. If you can download the file, go to the finder and type Crankcast and the file should play correctly.
3. Lastly, does anyone else with the problem are you unable to see the album art either? Crank, what are you using to attach the album art to the mp3? I dunno if that has anything to do with the file issue, but at this point could it hurt?

Time for the next 24-hour comic podcast:
Bloodrayne: The Third Reich (2010)
Rayne fights against the Nazis in Europe during World War II, encountering Ekart Brand, a Nazi leader whose target is to inject Adolf Hitler with Rayne’s blood in an attempt to transform him into a dhampir and attain immortality.
Ah Uwe…. classic.

Just as an aside, I’ve been reading Roger Eberts reviews over the years and as he has been getting stuff wrong a number of times in recent years. It seems like if he loses interest in what he’s watching in the first half hour he’ll miss a bunch as he nods off or whatever it is that happens. I still respect his opinion but he’s getting a bit out there.
Read his review of Inception, you’ll get so confused and lost and wonder why he doesn’t have an editor at this point.

Thanks for trying the name shortening trick folks, it looks like we’ve made some progress.
Tate, not sure where to start with yours. Try redownloading the file and see if it was a possible download error?
Geoff, thanks for trying that. Now I can try just outputting the file with the underscore instead and maybe that’ll do for now.
Will, I never add album art to the show.
Spooky: yes.
Nyssa: good call.
Rich: I’ve just been wondering if he’s finally become a cranky old man.

Tried re-downloading it again with no luck so on a whim I tried downloading it using Firefox instead of Chrome and it downloaded perfectly. Dunno what that means but at least it worked.

Tate, I’m not sure what happened there either but as you say, at least it worked. Thanks!
