The horror “Golden Boy” at the moment is Brian Keene, he made zombies cool again though I enjoy his none zombie stuff like Ghoul, Castaways, and Urban Gothic. Have you tried any Tim Powers, he is the master of “secret histories” story telling.

From the yahoo!tv blog:
“One hit the network does have is ‘Vampire Diaries,’ which has been performing well and continues to build its audience.”

Junji Ito’s mangas are worth a look (Gyo), Shintaro Kago, Suehiro Maruo. These are guys in japanese comics you should look into. Very grotesque horror and gore.
European: Thomas Ott. Really the only guy doing horror in europe I can whole-heartedly recommend. Also, try ‘Blacksad’, which is a anthropomorphic detective story that isn’t a Noir book.
And a novel that you should most definitely read is ‘The Physicists’ by Friedrich Dürematt. Is a classic comedy playing in a sanatorium, and has a great, great twist. So, I’d advise not to read the summary over at wiki, and just let your gut tell ya’ if you want to read it or not. Oh, I just realized you guys don’t like to get told what to do.
Sorry, and hopefully somewhat helpful…
